“I never did anything it just started hurting?”
Does this sound like you?
Do you suffer from a nagging injury that keeps you from doing the activities you love?
F.I.T. can help free you of your pain and restore normal function.
WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATED THERAPY?
Greenwich Sports Medicine is on the ground floor of a pioneering treatment for sports injuries that puts them in contact with professional and world-class athletes on a regular basis.
Greenwich Sports Medicine utilizes a method of treating sports related injuries called Functional Integrated Therapy. Functional Integrated Therapy or “F.I.T.” has often been called the “best kept secret in sports injuries” due to its ability to diagnose and achieve results in difficult cases.
Athletes from the national Hockey League, National Football League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball, as well as track and field’s elite athletes, turn to F.I.T. for relief.
The therapy works under the philosophy that the proper function of the body’s joints, soft tissue and nervous system are essential to speed up recovery from sports related injuries. Restoring this proper function improves performance.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR TREATMENT?
When an athlete comes to Greenwich Sports Medicine, electro-acupuncture may be used to treat the nervous system; soft tissue techniques including Active Release Techniques (ART) may be used to treat the soft tissue dysfunction and joint manipulation is employed to normalize joint mechanics. We customize our approach based on the specific needs of each individual and treat accordingly.
People are looking for magic machines. People have forgotten the magic of their hands. An excellent practitioner can achieve better results with his hands than with ultrasound and electric stimulation units. We use other tools as an extension of our hands.
The evaluation addresses everything in a functional manner. The muscles that are being used and the activity the person is performing are both taken into account.
For example, if a golfer has injured his or her shoulder muscles, the therapy takes into account all the supporting structures in the golf swing, not solely the injured muscles.
Typically, the golf swing only strengthens certain muscles of the body, leading to injuries by causing increased stress against the weaker muscles. This imbalance must be corrected to facilitate recovery and prevent further injury.
If a golfer loses range of motion and flexibility at their hips due to restricted or tight muscles, they will often compensate by overusing their arms to complete the swing. This increase in motion at the shoulder can eventually lead to pain and shoulder injury. Until the decreased hip movement is addressed the patient will continually re-injure their shoulder. This is why you can’t just look at the site of pain.
Every sport has similar injuries. One of the best tools we utilize at Greenwich Sports Medicine is video analysis. This involves videotaping a patient performing the movement that reproduces their symptoms. It is then analyzed on a monitor and reviewed with the patient. This allows the doctor to see exactly how the soft tissue is propelling the body through a run, throw, swing or any other recreational activity.
IS IT IMPORTANT TO PERFORM EXERCISES AFTER TREATMENT?
The therapy also makes use of exercises to correct muscle imbalances which can lead to injures in the future. We call this “functional rehabilitation.” It is important that the body is exercised in a functional manner in order to build appropriate muscles as well as joint strength and flexibility. This allows the athlete to perform optimally and prevent re-injury.
WHY IS FIT DIFFERENT?
Fit is different because FIT uses a unique combination of powerful therapies that include:
- Soft tissue techniques, including Active Release Technique (ART) and Graston to break down scar tissue and adhesions
- Contemporary electro-acupuncture to help normalize nervous system activity
- Video analysis to evaluate movement patterns
- Laser to stimulate cells in order to speed healing and reduce pain
- Microcurrent to soften scar tissue and increase circulation
- Joint manipulation techniques to normalize joint mechanics.
- Functional rehabilitation to restore optimal function and prevent reinjury
- Nutrition interventions to assist the healing and repair process

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM FIT?
The therapy is not only used to treat injuries, it is also used to diagnose problems before they get worse. Athletes come to Greenwich Sports Medicine, perform their sport movement and the mechanics of their motion are assessed.
Yvonne Harrison, the two time Puerto Rican 400-metre hurdle champion, said Greenwich Sports Medicine services are essential for a good track performance. “I love FIT” Harrison declared. It’s specific and gets exactly to where the root of the problem is. Greenwich Sports Medicine got to the bottom of why I was having those major injures.”
“They can definitely make the difference between a world-class athlete and an amateur one, especially where a half a second makes a big difference. They can look at you and figure out your body mechanics.”
NOT JUST FOR ATHLETES…
The therapy not only helps athletes recover from their injuries, It has been called upon by those in the medical community to help patients who are considering surgery, after failed surgery or most importantly as an integral part of post-surgical rehabilitation.
