Nutritional Laboratory

Take the guesswork out of your nutritional program. Whether you are just trying to eat better or you are an athlete looking for that edge, let Greenwich Sports Medicine customize a program that can improve wellness and overall performance with supplementation and diet. Through the use of Morphologic Hematology, Innovative laboratory testing and Bio Impedance Analyzer, Greenwich Sports Medicine will design a program based on your chemical and biological make up.

By measuring Acid/Alkaline balances, oxidative/free radical levels and gross mineralization concentrations, Greenwich Sports Medicine is able to develop a supplementation program to enhance the body’s means to recover from injury more quickly, change body composition and feel more energetic.

Bio Impedance Analysis is the assessment of changes in the electrical conductivity of tissue, which allows for the discovery of sub-acute injury patterns before injuries can occur.

Elevate the way you feel and function to a level you’ve never dreamed possible. Get rid of what is causing your health dysfunction on a cellular level. Let your body show you how good it can perform and what it can do for you, given the correct components. Start on the road to recovery today.

Morphologic Hematology:

Morphologic Hematology involves the examination of a fresh drop of living blood. The blood is viewed under a high-power video-microscope that has a closed-circuit video system which projects the microscopic image onto a video screen. This allows for simultaneous viewing by both the doctor and the patient. It is technically referred to as Darkfield-Microscopy or Live Cell Analysis.

It allows the direct inspection and interpretation of dozens of possible features of the bloodstream, red blood cells, and white blood cells. These features relate to the functional condition of the cardiovascular system, immune system, digestive system, liver and gland function, microbe (like bacteria, parasites and candida), toxins, stress, and free-radical damage.

Morphologic Hematology is an excellent means of viewing by microscope the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and blood plasma, just as they function in the body. The test itself is quite simple. A drop of blood is taken from your finger and placed on a microscope slide for viewing. The image from the slide is transmitted to a TV monitor so you can observe, along with Dr. Chimes, what the blood cells are revealing.

By examining the sample at different magnifications, you will learn of many specific, individual health needs. You will then be educated about appropriate dietary improvements, supplements, or special care. By following these suggestions, there will be an improvement in the cell picture that is clearly visible upon re-examination in one to two months.

Both the “before” and “after” visual images are highly motivational because “seeing is believing.” Re-examinations allow updating and fine tuning of your healthcare program for seeing continuous improvement. These improvements help you to feel better, look better, and perform better. By observing your venous blood conditions we can customize a program specifically geared for your individual needs. By evaluating shapes and other properties of individual blood cells, we are able to recommend other tests to verify some potential disorders.

These disorders include conditions that cannot easily be detected by using the traditional methods of analyzing blood, but may be confirmed by traditional tests. It should be noted that blood analysis by microscopy is NOT a diagnostic procedure and should not be used as such. This method was designed as a screening test to take the guesswork out of selecting an appropriate program for the individual patient.

The advantage of Morphologic Hematology is that a customized natural treatment, can be employed for say for a month, and you can return to see if there are any changes due to his prescribed treatment plan. Generally then, treatment can be more successful because these problems are more likely to be discovered while they are still in their infant stages.

Some of the findings can provide information about digestive efficiency, vitamin and mineral status, and much more. “Sticky” blood can cause fatigue and less oxygenation to the cells. Caffeine use, being around smokers, poor digestion, and even stress can be some of the contributing factors. The shapes and sizes of the red blood cells (cell morphology) is very important.

Once your test is completed, we will review the health indicators in relation to your specific situation. Then we will make recommendations for diet, treatment supplementation, and other tests to confirm suspected problems. You then can schedule a follow-up examination to monitor any progress and to update the program you are following.

What makes Morphologic Hematology unique is that it makes it possible to see something that cannot be seen any other way: the actual living state of conditions inside the body, including the effects on the cells and bloodstream of both nutritional deficiencies and other health risks. Morphologic Hematology is solid technology. The condition of your blood is the condition of your health.

Take the Guesswork Out of Supplementation.

Have you ever walked into a store and asked the person behind the counter, “Which vitamin should I take?” Does that person recommend the same vitamin to every one? What medical training does the salesperson have? How do you know if you really need it?

We take the guess work out of this very confusing area of nutrition. With a highly trained staff using technologically advanced evaluative equipment, we provide the answers for you. By measuring how you function on the cellular level, we are able to target your areas of deficiency. Whether your interest is to detoxify, change your body composition, or enhance your athletic performance, we offer nutritional supplementation as well as medically engineered foods that allow your body to start functioning optimally.

A major concern with supplementation is the risk of impurities found in some supplements. It’s important to understand that since the supplement industry is not FDA regulated, some products found on your local supermarket or pharmacy shelves might contain unexpected contaminants or impurities. Impurities such as mercury in fish oils and lead in calcium supplements can be detrimental to your health with potentially harmful effects.

Targeted Fat Loss

Targeted Fat Loss is a system that is used here at Greenwich Sports Medicine to adequately prescribe exercise, nutrition, and supplementation programs to help the client lose body fat and increase muscle mass using the latest in research based nutrition and exercise. With all the numerous approaches and fad diets out there how do you know what works best? Here at Greenwich sports medicine we strive ourselves on staying up to date on the latest research on diet and exercise and specialize as the only practice to really synergize the two. Research has shown the certain types of exercise are more successful than others for building lean muscle and raising metabolism. Research has also shown that eating certain types of food at the right time (ie. Time of day, before, after or during exercise) can have incredible results on body composition.

Attach quiz:

1. Hormonal status

2. Sleeping patterns

3. Sensitivity to carbohydrates

For example, “flabby” triceps are a symptom of high stress levels, not a lack of arm exercises. Stress tends to increase hormones that make more of the stress hormone cortisol, instead of making the androgen hormone DHEA.

Specific exercises, diet modifications along with herbal preparations called adaptogens, help the body handle stress better and consequently reduce cortisol levels. Some of the best supplements to help you decrease fat in the triceps include schisandra and rhodiola rosea. It’s not uncommon for a woman who is stressed to lose fat deposits in the arm within several weeks of starting a stress reduction program that includes the aforementioned procedures.

Another area in the body, the love handles, is usually a problem which results from circulating insulin levels. On a dietary note we recommend that the client decrease their carbohydrate intake, as well as eat several meals (protein should be included in each meal) throughout the day. This will help stabilize insulin levels. Supplementation with Fenugreek seeds, which are high in dietary fiber, will help control blood sugar levels and insulin levels.

If you have been frustrated with those hard to tone areas, let Greenwich Sports Medicine create an individualized program for you today.

Another concern is some supplements contain little or none of the claimed ingredients listed on the outside of the bottle. Therefore, the supplement will not have the intended therapeutic effect that it claims. This can result in ineffective treatment or possibly, an adverse effect. If the product is not independently tested or assayed, there is no assurance you are getting a product that is listed on the outside of the bottle.

Here at Greenwich Sports Medicine, we only purchase supplements from reputable companies that do independent testing on all their products. These companies conform to the standards of the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Purchasing from these companies (Metagenics, Thorne, etc.) assures that the products we offer will never contain contaminants or be under-dosed. With this brings peace of mind and confidence that you are getting a great product.

Nutrtional Lab Testing:

At Greenwich sports medicine we pride ourselves on using the most novel and cutting edge lab testing to customize a nutritional protocol for you. Whether it be hormone testing, allergy testing or just basic baseline lab work we can custom pick profiles to run based off your history and symptomology or run a full TRIAD profile to see an overall look at your nutritional health. The Triad profile will help customize a specific supplement protocol based off of your blood and urine.

Bulk Up With the TRIAD Profile

Bulking up is a popular past time for many health conscience individuals nowadays. There is a plethora of new gym equipment, supplements, magazines, and diets, all of which propose to provide the latest and greatest secrets for putting on that extra pound of muscle that so many seem desperate to do. Using the TRIAD, you can offer your patient an advanced, customized solution for their weight gain goals that stands out from the one-size fits all mass market programs.

Piecing Together the Muscle Maze with the TRIAD Profile

Fasting plasma amino acid levels have an obvious direct relationship to an individual’s net protein balance, while the Organix Profile can reveal blocks in metabolism that can inhibit weight loss and also shed light on an individual’s anabolic state. Lastly, the Allergix IgG4 90 Food Antibodies Profile offers a chance to detect foods that may be contributing to a leaky gut, which impedes optimal digestion – an essential for bulking up! Let’s have a quick look at each of these in more detail below…Amino Acids Profile and the Organix, which are part of the TRIAD, include a number of useful markers to determine if an individual is in a catabolic state.TRIAD Profile can be a very helpful tool in this regard.

Hormones & Weight Loss

In addition to an individual’s genetic predisposition, the hormonal state/environment of the body is a factor that can have a large bearing on the success of accruing muscle mass. An individual whose hormone cascade is such that they are prone to be in a catabolic state will always have a hard time putting on muscle. Catabolism is a state where the body breaks down excessive amounts of its own tissue, with muscle being one of the main target tissues.

While there are physical signs (i.e. low muscle mass) and symptoms (excessive hunger) that can indicate an individual is in a catabolic state, it’s always great to have some hard evidence in the form a blood or urine test to confirm. The

Good Insulin Function Is Key to Anabolism

Starting with the Organix, the marker beta-hydroxybutyrate is elevated when the patient has high ketone bodies in their urine. High ketones are one of the hallmarks of type 2 diabetes; the chronic disease characterized by poor blood glucose control and impaired insulin function. If this marker is high, your patient needs to look at how regularly they eat and take some nutrients to help with blood glucose and insulin function.

Muscle Breakdown Revealed on Organix Profile

The other set of markers that can be raised if the patient is in a catabolic state are the branched-chain keto acids. These markers on the Organix occur as part of the breakdown of the branched-chain amino acids (i.e. isoleucine, leucine, valine). Branched-chain amino acids are the primary amino acids the body chews up from muscle tissue when a patient is in a catabolic state.p>

High levels of beta-hydroxybutyrate or the branched-chain keto acids or both are important markers signaling that your patient’s hormone cascade is out of whack and needs to be corrected if they are to be successful in their efforts to accrue muscle.

Bulking Up With Custom Aminos

If the Allergix section of your patient’s TRIAD Profile returns with a significant number (i.e. >5) of positives, it is highly likely that their digestion is compromised and more specifically their protein digestion/absorption. Comprised digestion/absorption can obviously hamper attempts to gain weight or bulk up. It’s pointless for your patient to pump copious amounts of protein powder into them if they can’t even digest it properly.

The Amino Acids, also included in the TRIAD, offer the clinician a fantastic tool to meet a patient’s protein/amino acid needs, while addressing their leaky gut. The TRIAD comes with an individualized custom amino acid prescription that the clinician can have made by a compounding pharmacist. These mixtures feature what are called free-form or singular amino acids. These type of amino acids don’t require digestion and therefore are absorbed efficiently even in a patient who has a leaky gut and/or compromised digestion.

Weighty Matters Benefit From Targeted TRIAD

So…a patient that is overweight or obese has come to you seeking help to lose weight. What to do? It’s not hard to find a weight loss protocol or program, it’s more an issue of finding the right one for your patient!

Wacky Weight Loss

Weight loss is one area where the average clinician does not need to look far for a range of treatment options. Our modern day society places a high priority on looking fit, so naturally the weight loss industry is awash with different schemes and scams targeted at the vulnerable and uniformed. As a clinician, you will want to offer a treatment that is scientifically based and tailored to the patient’s unique needs and requirements. The

The TRIAD Profile combines three of Metametrix’s most popular profiles, namely, Organix, Amino Acids, and Allergix IgG Food Antibodies—into a single innovative tool offering customized intervention options.

The average clinician is aware that achieving weight loss for their patients’ is not just a simple matter of balancing calorie intake and expenditure. It’s much more about balancing and harmonizing the myriad of reactions, transformations, and conversions that food goes through during the entire digestion and elimination process.

IgG Food Antibodies

Starting from the top of the digestive tract, food must first be broken down, digested and assimilated with minimal fuss before it can make its way to the different cells and tissues of the body for further use. Overweight and obese patients often have limited diets, where there is a tendency to consume excessive amounts of a limited number of foods. Aside from robbing the body of a wide range of nutrients, this type of eating pattern can lead to a reduction in the body’s ability to digest that food; a consequence of which can be raised levels of IgG4 food antibodies.

The Allergix IgG Food Antibodies is a great tool for determining if a patient has any major issues with the way their immune system is responding to the food they eat. With motivation being a big key for some patients trying to lose weight, a lab report showing foods with elevated IgG4 reactions can provide the ideal stimulus to change their diet.

Amino Acids

Once through the stomach and into the intestines, the different components of food are transported to different tissues according to requirements. Amino acids are one important component of food that serves as the building blocks of protein. Protein is really much of the dry matter you have left if you were to take out all the water from the body. Protein in turn makes up much of the body’s structure. This structure is constantly being replaced so that with the passing of each year, the body essentially has a whole new structure. The lining of the small intestines is replaced every three days! These structures are modeled on the food eaten day in and day out in the preceding year.

Thyroid Function & Amino Acid Status

One simple but important structure that is affected by amino acid intake is the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in weight loss, with an underactive thyroid being an obstacle to effective weight loss. The amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine have an important effect of thyroid function. Studies have shown that an underactive thyroid can be induced by a low protein intake.

The Amino Acid Profile can be used to measure both the level and quality of a patient’s protein intake. Overweight patients consuming a diet with poor protein quality may present with imbalances in some of the major amino acids, such as low levels of methionine that can be caused by a restrictive vegan diet. These can be addressed both through the diet and by supplementation with a custom amino acid mixture.

Ketogenic diets, popular in the weight loss industry, tend to include higher amounts of protein, in which case, an amino acid profile can serve to monitor imbalances in amino acids caused by high levels of individual amino acids. The Organix Profile also has a marker called orotate, which is very specific for signaling excessive protein intake. So clinicians can also use the TRIAD Profile to ward patients off dangerous weight loss diets that feature too little or too much protein or individual amino acids.

Organix

The mitochondria are said to be the powerhouse of cells in the human body. They possess the machinery whose job it is to burn the bulk of carbohydrate and fat taken into the body. If there are any blocks in this part of the cell for an overweight patient, it can have a major effect on their ability to lose weight. Fortunately, the Organix measures most of the markers of this pathway allowing the clinician to determine if it is blocked in their patient. Deficiencies of certain b-vitamins are one factor that can lead to a block in this pathway, called the Kreb’s cycle.

Fat Burning Ablaze

Beta-oxidation is the chemical name for the pathway in the body that is responsible for extracting most of the energy from fat. There are other pathways in the body that extract energy from fat, but beta-oxidation is the most important one in terms of overall contribution. It follows then that it is a very important pathway to optimize in overweight and obese patients trying to lose weight.

Carnitine is one of the nutrients that can limit optimal function of beta-oxidation if it is in inadequate supply. Markers on the Organix profile can reveal whether an overweight patient may require more carnitine to optimize the function of beta-oxidation and in so doing aid in weight loss.
